  • Thanks to the Tech Wizard, I was able to backup my picture files and music before my hard drive crashed. I will keep Toms number handy for future help!- Jeremy
  • I called Tom when my computer would not start up. Tom determined that my hard drive went bad and also discovered that it was still under warranty even though he did not build the computer, was able to get the manufacturer to replace the drive and it only cost me the labor to install it and reinstall my software. He could have easliy sold me a new drive as well.

Advantages of using The Tech Wizard

I just switched from Dial-up to Cable Internet. My modem is plugged directly into my computer. My neighbor said that is not safe. Why?

Your neighbor is somewhat correct. Your computer has Firewall software built in that is part of the Operating System (both Windows and Mac) that will HELP separate your computer from other computers and the Internet. However, a software Firewall is just one tool to help keep you from being attacked. What's worse is, if that Firewall is not properly configured, you may be even more prone to attack. One of the best (but not the only) means of protection is to use a Router between your modem and your computer. Most commonly sold routers have built in hardware firewalls, an even stronger barrier, especially if used in conjunction with a software Firewall.

I bought a new router, plugged it in to my modem, and connected up my computer using the cables that came with the router. So now I am safe from attacks, right?

Ummm, not exactly. Most routers bought today for home use are wireless. Wireless routers are ideal for home networking because typically homes are not wired for computer networking. With that said, people who are looking for the safety of a router but are using it with say, a desktop that they are not carrying around the house may just plug the cables in and think because they are not using the wirless part of the router, that they are safe. NOT SO!!! It so happens that because of that thinking, they have now opened the entire network to the world. Most common router manufacturers box and sell their routers with basic default credentials that MUST be changed in oreder to secure the network. Your computer may be wired to the router but the router is advertising its name and that it is not encrypted, giving easy access to your network to anyone.

An anti-virus program came with my computer & updates itself every day. That should keep me safe when I surf the Internet & read my email. Do I need to do anything else?

Well, thats a good start. But AV programs are just that...Anti-VIRUS. They do nothing for protecting you with a stronger Firewall than the built-in one that came with your computer. AV programs are not equipped to warn you of an attack to your system. Most do not check for Adware, Spyware, or other malicious software. For better protection use an Internet Security suite. The programs have covered most of the bases that will help you from being attacked or infected. Many come with built-in back up and restore programs that will help protect your data, which is usually the biggest concern for most people. Having a virus infect your computer is pain in-the-neck and an inconvenience. But losing pictures, music, tax records, and other valuable data is beyond just being an inconvenience. Once it's gone, it's gone.

The computer upstairs is connected to my printer but I want to be able to print from my laptop while I'm on the patio as well. Can I do that?

Most likely, yes. I didn't mean to sound like I shook a Magic 8 Ball to come up with that answer but under most circumstances you probaly will be able to configure the computers to have both use the printer. Operating system, printer type, network type, drivers, connection type, etc, all play a roll in be able to do that. Sometimes something there may make it difficult to accomplish what you are trying to do, but there is more than one way to skin a computer.
